Former Junior Dragster Picks Up Super Pro Win; Snead Makes It Two Straight

Smith drilled the tree with a .003 reaction time. He finished his pass in 5.211 seconds at 128.18 mph. His opponent, Ronald McGaha and his 1969 Camaro from Mt. Carmel, had a .035 reaction time and completed the run in 6.528 seconds at 105.50 mph.

Larry Snead from Bristol is two-for-two in the new Bristol Bandits division. Snead used a .032 reaction time with an elapsed time of 9.166 seconds at 137.90 mph to take the victory over Elizabethton's Richard Markland. Markland lost traction leaving the line and shut the car down early. He had a .190 reaction and finished the run in 15.210 seconds at 109.53 mph.

In the Pro division, Bristol's Scott Vestal was a little slower off the line than Boone, N.C.'s Neal Church, but he ran closer to his dial-in and pulled off the victory. Vestal's 1976 Mustang II left the line with a .061 reaction time, compared to the .054 of the 1974 Nova in the other lane. Vestal ran a 5.702 E.T. on a 5.69 dial-in. Church was further off his dial-in, running a 6.425 E.T. on a 6.37 dial.

A battle of Bluff City natives marked the Sportsman finals. Jason Nelson picked up the win in his 1974 Dodge Dart. His .095 reaction time, coupled with an 11.201 E.T. at 113.57, was enough to knock off Jim Statzer's 1988 Mustang. Statzer. Statzer left the starting beams with a .073 reaction time and finished his run in 12.691 seconds at 108.66 mph.

Roan Mountain's Ariel Hill collected her first trophy in First Class Travel Junior Dragster Division I action. Hill ran right on her dial-in to oust Kingsport's Dylan Davis. Hill ran a 12.256 E.T. on a 12.25 dial-in at 51.45 mph. Davis ran an 8.985 E.T. on an 8.90 dial-in at 72.71 mph.

Chris Tester from Piney Flats had a perfect .000 reaction time and completed the run at 8.023 seconds at 76.56 mph. His opponent, Fairlawn, Va.'s Sierra Cox, ran a little faster than her dial-in, causing a disqualification.

The 27th Annual O'Reilly Super Chevy Show rolls into Bristol Dragway this weekend, Sept. 21-23, with spectacular jet dragsters, nitro coupes and exhibition vehicles. Chevy fans also will be able to find hard-to-find restoration parts and memorabilia in the Performance & Restoration marketplace and car corral. The TREMEC transmissions car show will give fans a chance to get up close to many super Chevys.

The Bristol Dragway season continues on Tuesday night with Street Fights 4-Wheels Unlimited Truck Night featuring the Hayworth Tire Street Fights Wide Open Series.
