Bristol Dragway Regular Earns Sunday Victory in K&N Spring Fling
Bristol Dragway overflowed last weekend with hundreds of bracket racers from across the country hoping to cash one of the $20,000-to-win checks during the K&N Spring Fling 20’s presented by Sparco.
One of Thunder Valley’s regular competitors, Denver Maltba, earned Sunday’s $20,000 victory by using a little home-track advantage to guide him to the win.
Maltba, who hails from Newland, N.C., drove his 2012 Racetech dragsters to the win over Jeff Strickland from Red Bay, Ala. Interestingly, the dragster Maltba drove was a graduation gift.
In Sunday’s final round, Strickland had a quicker .005 reaction time, but ended up on the losing end at the stripe. Maltba left the starting line with a .010 R.T. and raced through the line in 6.108 seconds (6.08 dial-in) at 162.33 mph.
Strickland crossed the finish in 6.266 seconds (6.18 dial-in) at 149.51 mph in his runner-up effort.
Bob Maclosky of Jackson, N.J. took the victory on Saturday against Cookeville’s Brian Jones. Jones ran under the dial in the final round giving the win to Maclosky.
Marty Dabney of Troy, Va. earned Friday’s final round after he and Steven McGrory of Taylorsville, Ga. both turned in tardy reaction times at the start. Dabney’s .052 R.T. gave him a distinct advantage over McGrory’s .143 R.T. At the line, Dabney was able to sail to victory against his opponent.
Racing continues in Thunder Valley with Taco Bell Street Fights on Thursday, May 24. Gates open at 5 p.m., with racing at 6 p.m. Anyone who shows a Taco Bell receipt at the gate can race for only $5. Spectator admission is $5, while those without a receipt will be able to race for $10.
