Garrison, Hodges Earn DER Series Victories at Bristol Dragway
Mother Nature took care of Saturday’s action during the DER Bracket Racing Series at Bristol Dragway, forcing drivers to race hard on Sunday to rack up points leading in to this weekend’s season finale.
Denny Garrison of Elizabethton drove to the Super Pro victory over Bobby McKinney of Bakersville, N.C. Garrison had a .028 reaction time in the final round and ran close to his dial, a 5.207 elapsed time on a 5.20 dial-in, at 130.83 mph to take home the crown. McKinney had a quicker .008 R.T., but broke out after running quicker than his dial, handing the win to Garrison.
C.J. Hodges from Boone, N.C. earned the Pro Division win after Bluff City’s Michael Combs also ran quicker than his dial-in during the final round. Hodges had a .022 R.T. and a 6.708 E.T. (6.70 dial-in) at 100.49 mph to seal the deal. Combs had an 8.840 E.T. (8.86 dial-in) at 74.78 mph.
Cody Spears won the Sportsman division over Kingsport’s Van Greer. Spears left the line with a .011 R.T. and raced through the finish line with a 13.545 E.T. (13.51 dial-in) at 91.37 mph. Greer used a .077 R.T. and a 17.302 E.T. (17.28 dial-in) at 76.02 in his runner-up effort.
Bluff City’s Bill Roberts claimed the Trophy class win by defeating Tanya Street of Cedar Bluff, Va. Roberts had a .017 R.T. and an 18.482 E.T. (18.34 dial-in) at 64.08 mph. Street left the line with a .082 R.T. and completed her run in 17.622 seconds (17.48 dial-in) at 76.93 mph.
Jerry Turner, also of Bluff City, turned away Dustin Lee from Mohawk in the final round of Motorcycle action. Turner had a .008 R.T. and a 5.865 E.T. (5.84 dial-in) at 119.74 mph in the final against Lee’s .014 R.T. and too quick 5.940 E.T. (5.99 dial-in) at 108.18 mph.
Landon Stahl from Boone, N.C. won Junior Dragster Division II after his opponent, Allison Eads of Bristol, Va., turned on the red light. Stahl had a .033 R.T. and an 8.219 E.T. (8.23 dial-in) at 78.89 mph on his winning run.
Jonesborough’s Ethan Ford ousted Brianna Goins of Louisville, Tenn. in the final round when Goins ran faster than her dial. Ford’s winning run was a .184 R.T. and a 13.104 E.T. (13.00 dial-in) at 47.92 mph. Goins had a 9.275 E.T. on a 9.39 dial-in.
Racing continues in Thunder Valley with the Taco Bell Street Fights on Thursday evening, followed by the final DER Bracket Series weekend of the year Sept. 15-16.
