Kirkland tops Byrd in DER Action
The coveted "Wally" trophy was once again up for grabs at the DER Racing Series at Bristol Dragway last weekend.
Travis Kirkland of Madisonville beat Allen Byrd of Church Hill for the win with a perfect reaction time and a dead-on 5.526 elapsed time at 121.32 mph in Saturday's Super Pro finals.
Eighteen-year-old Kellie Shortridge of Mooresburg finished ahead of Ken Patterson of Rockwood with an R.T. of .004 in Super Pro on Sunday to claim the Wally. Shortridge finished in 4.920 seconds (4.90 dial-in) at 140.75 mph. Patterson fouled out with a -.003 R.T.
In Saturday’s Pro finals, Brandon Bailey of Glade Spring, Va. beat Ricky Boyd of Willis, Va. with an R.T. of .026 and a 9.978 E.T. (9.79 dial-in) at 72.40 mph. Boyd had an R.T. of .045 with an 8.085 E.T. at 81.00 mph.
Sunday’s Pro final saw Dandridge’s Corey Smith win the top prize over Richard Newman of Rogersville. Smith ran a dead-on 8.148 E.T. at 84.53 mph.
Jason Hayes of Mt. Carmel had an RT of .133 with an ET of 5.958 at 115.86 mph to win over Bristol’s Ben Knight in Saturday’s Motorcycle final. Knight won the Wally on Sunday over Michelle Jacobs of Dandridge. Knight’s RT was .025 with an ET of 6.531 at 114.63 mph.
Don Evans of Abingdon, Va. knocked off Ben Knight in Saturday’s Sportsman finals. Evans’ RT was .106, and he ran a 12.325 ET (12.32 dial-in) at 105.80 mph.
Sunday’s Sportsman final saw Brian Dunnigan of Mooresburg beat Jason Nelson of Bluff City with an RT of .018 and an ET of 10.610 a 124.13 mph.
Chester Lay of Corryton dropped Bill Griffin with an ET of 16.918 (16.88 dial-in) at 75.01 mph and a .036 RT in Saturday’s Trophy final. In Sunday’s final, Brad Hall of Greenville, S.C. won topped Rutledge’s Michael Nuttall. Hall’s RT was .047 with an ET of 17.308 at 77.70 mph.
Drew Smith of Barbourville, Ky. took top honors in Saturday’s Junior Dragster Division I over Cannon Griffey of New Market. Smith’s RT was .070 with an ET of 9.134 at 70.58 mph, while Griffey fouled out of the competition. Lucas McKinney of Elizabethton won Sunday’s Division I final with an ET of 9.063 at 66.98 mph and an RT of .095 after Dylan Howard of Corryton broke out.
Saturday’s Junior Dragster Division II final went to Dane Shinault of Hillsville, Va. Shinault took the win with an RT of .052 and an ET of 7.918 seconds at 82.52 mph. Sunday’s final saw Mitch Ellison of Rogersville win with an RT of .009 and an ET of 7.915 at 81.85 mph. Katie Street of Cedar Bluff, Va. put up a fight by being in both finals on both days.
