NHRA officials today announced the 2011 Thunder Valley Nationals once again will return to the popular Father’s Day weekend slot on the schedule. Always one of the most prominent stops on the calendar among drivers and fans, Thunder Valley will host the stars of the NHRA June 17-19, 2011.

Bristol Dragway hosted the 2010 edition of the Thunder Valley Nationals on Father’s Day weekend, the first time the race has taken place on that date in the event’s history. The holiday proved to be the perfect time for NHRA to visit Bristol as it was a tremendously successful event.

In 2010, Dragway officials hosted several special Father’s Day-themed events to coincide with the race. Additionally, the date allows families the opportunity to plan a summer trip to include the Thunder Valley Nationals.

Jeff Byrd, Bristol Dragway president and general manager, said the date will provide fans an even greater Thunder Valley experience.

“Father’s Day is a special holiday for families, and we can think of nothing better than bringing dad to Bristol Dragway to watch these 8,000 horsepower machines roar through the valley,” Byrd said. “The weather here is beautiful that time of year and families can plan their summer vacations to include a trip to the Thunder Valley Nationals. It is the ideal date for us to host our friends from the NHRA.”

The 2011 edition of the Thunder Valley Nationals marks the 11th annual event in Bristol. NHRA’s 2011 event schedule consists of 22 races.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD, a part of the ESPN network, the worldwide leader in sports, will once again provide exclusive television coverage, on a same-day basis, of all NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events featuring action from qualifying rounds on Saturday and Sunday's race.
